1935 - Wichita Silent Club was established in or before 1935 and met after the FRAT meetings. They met at 328 ½ N. Main then moved to the old IOOF hall. 1948 - High Hatters Club was established then changed to Wichita Athletic Club for the Deaf, WACD, in 1950 or 51. Up until this point the meetings were held in different deaf people’s homes each time. 1955 - Wichita Silent Club and Wichita Athletic Club for the Deaf merged. 1960 - The name Wichita Association of the Deaf was adopted. 1974 - Deaf and Hard of Hearing Counseling Service started to rent the building at 1646 E. Central in about 1974. When DHHCS found that they needed a bigger building they asked United Way, their only funding source, for funds to buy 1644 E. Central. United Way responded that it was not their policy to buy property for their agencies so WAD was asked to buy it. 1981 - Federal non-profit status was applied for and achieved. 1982 - WAD purchased the building and rented part of it to DHHCS. DHHCS moved out in the mid-80s and WAD has been there ever since. 1987 – WAD newsletter was started again and named “The Deaf Wichitan”. 1987 - At the KAD convention in August, KAD agreed to lend $20,000 to WAD to refinance the mortgage. 1989 - The new kitchen and office was completed. 1995 - WAD building was paid off. |
